Project: To find a good method for retrofitting Old Main with insulation and solar panels so as to help the university reach the future goal of carbon neutrality.
- What different types of insulations are there?
- What are the most productive ways to insulate Old Main with out a "deconstructive renovation?"
- How could solar panels be utilized to improve heat regulation and/or electricity consumption?
-
Method:
Research
`
1. What kind of R/RSI rating do buildings similar to Old Main have?
2. How much more R/RSI is required to actually be able to make the building carbon free?
3. How would the building be insulated without major renovations (CMU walls)?
4. How much would it cost and how much would a building save in energy?
5. Is the design feasible can it be done with many buildings similar to Old Main?
Special Problems:
-How would you insulate a wall made mostly of glass?
Also
-Is there a way to prevent most of the heat from exiting through the drop ceilings?

Might be more useful if you added your sources as a list to the side of your blog, so they can always be seen - rather then be hidden in one of your posts! Just a suggestion. It might also be a good idea to go out and take some photos of Old Main. Maybe for an original graphic you could do a wall detail/section of old main, so you could focus on the insulation within it!
Great suggestions Morgan!
I think it is important to note that adding insulation will not make the Old Main carbon neutral on its own, but it will certainly help.
Your thesis question could read something like, "what is the best method of retrofitting the Old Main building with increased insulation to help the University meet its goal of carbon neutrality?"
Hey Kevin. Here is a great site which offers information all about anything you need. You can find solar panel information, projects similar to old main, and tonnes more of energy saving information.

UBC has been developing a Solar Canopy that allows them to send sunlight throughout a building. They seem to address a lot of issues that may arise and they were keeping cost and effectiveness in mind. (http://www.phas.ubc.ca/ssp/solar_canopy.htm). Also in my research I have come across a lot of data that suggests berming and rooftop gardens can provide substantial insulation.
Thanks Kevin, thats going in my abstract!
Found a site that has links to hundreds of articles about solar panels.. check it out
